In Norse myth, the world is held together by an ash. Yggdrasil’s roots reach down to the underworld, yet even in myth the tree is never safe: a serpent gnaws at its roots, deer strip its branches, and its trunk rots at the sides. Prophecy (when the last ash dies) pulls that story forward into the present moment. Across two screens, above ground and below, the film gathers affected ash, from bare branches to torn roots and on to an opening left by a fallen tree beside a Bronze Age tomb. Ash keys are lowered into water, a threshold between worlds. A pulsing soundtrack incorporates field recordings gathered by the artist, while an AI-generated voice whispers a line distilled from the myth: “When the last ash dies, the world will fall.” With ash dieback killing ash across Europe, the warning comes from a technology increasingly framed as a risk to humanity’s future, an oracle implicated in what it foretells.
