Framed digital photograph printed on Innova FibaPrint ultra smooth gloss

223 × 322 mm

The bare, dry branches of a dead ash tree are turned upside down, manipulated until they read as roots reaching through dark soil. Above ground becomes below, and the tree is mirrored by what lies beneath it. In Norse myth, the roots of the World Tree reach down into the underworld, and Celtic imaginings place the Otherworld below, beyond water and earth. The image dwells in that dark ground, where mycelium and soil life feed on the dying and turn loss into new growth. As Ash Dieback takes hold, Below the Sickness holds on to the cycle in which death feeds life.
